I was sorry to hear about the loss of Abee. I met Chuck I think back in
63 at Ft. Lee Va. We were there for The Parachute Riggers class (T10) and
reserve. There was Big Moe, Marty North and myself from Dyess. I sort of
hooked up with Abee during our stay there. We had just P.Oed North's in-laws
when we went through Charleston S.C. We arrived there around 0600 Sat am.
They fixed breakfast for us, a real big Southern breakfast. North's
Father-in-law fixed Moe a plate and took Moe out to the back porch, which
was really nice. It was screened in, and had a nice table and chairs out
there. North and I fixed our plate and started out to the back porch, and
North's father-in-law told us we could eat in the dining room with them. We
told him it was ok We'd just eat with our boss. (Moe was NCOIC at Dyess) Boy
did the stinky stuff hit the fan. After I tied up with Abee at Ft. Lee, he
showed me around after work, and introduced me to the speak easys. I really
had fun with him. He kept me out of trouble, well most of the time. I
remember one night we were at a place, that was upstairs, and some guys
started mouthing us, well there were two of them and two of us, so we took
it outside in the alley. One guy ran, and Abee went and got his car. He said
lets go, and I kept working on the other guy spinning him up and down the
left side of the car. Abee said, Al get in the car or I am going to have to
whip you. Well I didn't doubt him one bit, so I got in the car and we went
back to the barracks. After we graduated, I never saw him again, but I still
think of him, and the speak easys.
I'll always remember him, as well as Moe and North. Give Abee's family my
condolence. May God speed him to his reward.
Take care and God Bless.................. Al Joye |
