My sincere condolences to Charlie's family. I will always remember him as a hard charger on my Sewart team. Of particular note was a partial team jump out of the first C-130B delivered to the USAF at Sewart. General Westmoreland, Commander of the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY wanted to use this as a photo, press op on his 101st jump and requested our Wing Commander to have the aircraft ready in front of Base Ops at 0700 on a Monday morning.

I received a call at midnight Saturday from the Wing Commander and was told to have a team on board at 0630, that this was a USAF aircraft, not USA, and he wanted us to be first out.

When Westy and his aide climbed on board we were seated ready to go, leaving the left door for him. He was surprised and his aide came over to tell me they would go on first pass and then the crew could bring us around for the second pass. I told him this was not possible that we had an exercise going and had to infiltrate to an LZ for assault landing training. He came back and said the General wanted us to delay in the door until they had exited. I made no comment to that.

When the green light came on we had at least 5 or 6 men out the door before he exited.  Helicopters were everywhere taking pictures but they could not distinguish who was who was whom in the air.  He was pretty well ticked off at me and I figured I may come out as an Airman Basic.  Chuck was right there with me and we had several beers afterward discussing the whole thing.

A very good man, Chuck. He will be missed.................. Dick Sigman
