The Gig Harbor resident graduated from Gig Harbor High School in 2007.

Barnes joined the Air Force in March of 2008, and was assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord in April 2012.

He served as a Combat Controller with the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron.

Friends described 23-year-old Ty Barnes as a solid, great guy who had an infectious laugh.

Barnes, who was the youngest of three boys, was a senior airman who was posthumously promoted to staff sergeant. All Rights Reserved.
